Alchemy is the process of transformation through four stages –

Nigredo is the first stage in the alchemical magnum opus, associated with the colour black. It embodies the darkness and confusion that is the inevitable side effect of every beginning, before clarity comes through. The darkness that bears within it the seeds of light.

Albedo is the second stage in the alchemical magnum opus, associated with the colour white. It follows the confusion of the Nigredo stage with purification, creating a union of the primal opposites, yin and yang. 

Citrinitas is the third stage in the alchemical magnum opus, associated with the colour yellow. It follows the purification of the albedo stage with the dawn of awakening, an emergence from within the self after the shadow and light stages. 

Rubedo is the final stage in the alchemical magnum opus, associated with the colour red. Past the balance of dark and light, after the awakening, comes the fully matured stage of gold emerging from lead, of the philosopher’s stone. It is the colour of blood, of invigorating and complete life.
